My World Tuesday - Air Mata Kuching

The Malay word, Air Mata Kuching, can be translated literally as Cat's Eye Water! In Chinese, it's called Long Yan (龙眼), that means Dragon's Eye. Hee...hee...hee...in actual fact it is dried longan water. The fruit is named as such because it resembles an eyeball when the shell is removed. It is round with translucent flesh and the black seed shows through the flesh, similar to the iris of an eye.

Longan is a fruit that is similar to lychee ~ translucent flesh and extremely sweet-tasting. I love the fresh longan fruits. Most of the longan fruits we have locally are imported from Southern China i.e. Guangdong or from Thailand. The Malaysian variety bears smaller fruit with thinner flesh.

This stall in Chinatown is very popular for it's boiled dried longan water. It is one of the stalls that have been there for ages. We would not hesitate to stop by it for a cold bowl of longan water to quench our thirst after our shopping under the hot sun.

So the fruit is those things that look like small ice blocks? I´ve had some lychee but it wasn´t so translucent.

I have eaten this fruit before and it's very nice, although I must admit that I do prefer the Lychee

But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
