Nepalese Street in KL

This is a busy street on a Sunday in city centre. The whole street was filled with foreign workers, mainly from Nepal. As you walk along the five-foot-way of the shops, you have a sense that you are either in India or Nepal. The sight, sound and smell that surround you are so foreign.

If you see clearly, the signages on this street even has words written in Nepalese. One can find Nepalese restaurants, grocery, hostel, money transfer services here. It's amazing to find so many of the workers congregating here on their off day, i.e. Sunday. It's a good opportunity to learn about the culture of Nepal by hanging out around here.

Are there many foreign workers in your city? Which country are they mainly from?

Dear Maxine,

I have met many nice Nepalese workers too. They are usually very hard working people. As soon as I know they are Nepalese, I would usually greet them with 'Namaste'. Without fail, they would instantly break into a smile. Many of them work in restaurant around Subang Jaya. Together with the Burmese, I find them to be more reliable workers.

The foreign workers here are mainly from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa. They work mainly in the farms. Though, I watched from the Tele that there are many Thai and Chinese over-stayers hiding in rural areas as well.

We have a lot of foreign residents here, not all of them workers. Some are asylum seekers, and some are tourists. Most of them were Asian, I would say, Indian and Pakistani. But lately we have a high number of Eastern Europeans and people from the Middle East coming in. We have Albanians, Afghans, Kurds, Lithuanians - etc etc.

Walking down our city's main street these days, you hardly hear an English voice!

This reminds me, I read in Malay Mail the other day about this group going around doing robbery in broad daylight. Apparently they look like they're Latin American or Middle Eastern. The lady driver wore all white, quite sexy and was driving quite an expensive looking car and acting as a lookout while two guys break in.

The whole ordeal was captured on tape by the unlucky fler's neighbor. Imagine that - I never would have thought this. Usually when it comes to house break-ins, the usual suspects come to mind.

So you ppl pls be careful.

ah KL, how I miss it!

"Use your first smile, your first form of generosity, of love, of kindness—use it at home; start at home. And if there is something left over—if … your plate is just full of abundance of patience and goodness and smiles and joy, then by all means, you should go … and offer that to others. But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
