Monochrome Monday - A Traditional Baba Nyonya Wedding

I captured this frame of a black & white photo last weekend in my hometown, Melaka. It shows the bride and groom of the Straits-born Chinese, known as Peranakan or Baba Nyonya, in their traditional wedding costumes. This photo was taken 50 years ago on 26 April 1959. The bride is the Nyonya lady that appeared in the video of this posting: 'My World Tuesday - Packed Wonders'.

These days, not many young Baba Nyonya couple who wear this traditional costumes for their wedding. A Baba friend of mine busies himself with promoting the Baba Nyonya culture to ensure that this heritage will continue with the young generations.

This is a posting for Monochrome Monday's meme. Check out the world in black and white at this portal.

This is so beautiful, I also saw this type of photos in a nonya restaurant. I love nonya food. :) When I was in Malacca, I will always visit the nonya restaurant, I think is called OLE.

They're wonderful costumes and I hope your friend succeeds in promoting them among the young ones. It's a shame when we lose our connections with our cultures and history.

They look very serious, don't they. Rather different to today's manic celeb grins.

Very cool photos! Details are great.

"Use your first smile, your first form of generosity, of love, of kindness—use it at home; start at home. And if there is something left over—if … your plate is just full of abundance of patience and goodness and smiles and joy, then by all means, you should go … and offer that to others. But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
