Lunch at Madras Lane

We have many delicious food sold at hawker centre.  This is one of the famous hawker centre in the heart of KL's Chinatown.  It is known as Madras Lane.  Madras Lane got its name from the Madras Cinema that used to be located nearby.  After movies, movie-goers will head to the hawker centre for curry mee, yong tou foo instead of what we have these days, e.g. pop corn & Coke.

Seen here are 2 ladies enjoying Yong Tou Foo (minced fish paste stuffed into tofu, brinjal, bitter gourd, tofu skin & deep-fried) for their lunch at Madras Lane's hawker center.

As I am posting this, my sister-in-law has been admitted to the medical centre for the delivery of her baby.  She is in labour now.  My family and I are praying that she will have a safe delivery.  May both mother and child be safe and well.  If you are reading this posting, please help to say a prayer for both my sis-in-law and her baby girl. Thank you.

Ayam Golek

The holy month of Ramadhan is here!  For a glutton like me, it means visiting bazaar Ramadhan to enjoy delicious food.  Ha ha...I am not the only one.  In fact, my neighbours and I would make plans together to visit bazaar Ramadhan to try out the various food on offer there.  My favourite would be stalls that sell Kelantanese delights, for instance Akok, Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang, Ayam Percik or Gulai Ikan Tongkol.

This is an Ayam Golek stall in SS18 Subang Jaya's Bazaar Ramadhan.

Do you visit bazaar Ramadhan?  What are your favourite food that you usually get from the bazaar?

Eat As Much As You Can

Durian, Durian, Durian - the Eat As Much As You Can sale is on at the fruit stall at USJ 14.  Just pay RM9 and start enjoying these sweet-bitter and rich flavour durian.  My neighbours planned an outing for 10 of us to enjoy the durian together. You have to be at the stall by 4pm when the lorry unload the durians that were freshly picked from the owner's ochard in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan. This way, you will be assured to get the best quality durians as there is a crowd gathering there and everyone wants to get the best deal.  It's my first time trying out this deal.  It's fun to have a big group of buddies to enjoy the fruits together.

The photo here showed my neighbours, Mr. & Mrs Chew delighted with the yellow-flesh durian.  Yellow flesh durian usually has a bitter-sweet taste and are more preferred by durian lovers.

Cut Fruit Seller

Cut fruit seller at Petaling Street.  It only costs RM1.20 (about USD 0.40) for a packet or slice of fruit.  We ate a lot while standing there.  The seller even rewarded us with a packet of jackfruit as we were buying endlessly while standing at her stall.

Dumpling Indulgence

The dumpling festival, called Duan Wu Jie falls on 23 June this year.  Recently a friend gave us a cooking lesson on how to prepare this Zong Zi dumpling, wrapped in bamboo leaves.  Our group of 8 had a fun time struggling to get our dumplings wrapped in the pyramid-like shape. Have you tried this dumpling before? What kind of flavour do you like?

Ingredients for Bak Chang

Duan Wu Festival falls on 23 June this year.  This is when we enjoy Bak Chang, i.e. dumpling made with glutinuous rice, with  filling comprised of belly pork, beans, mushroom, dried prawns, chestnut and salted egg yolk.  The dumplings are usually wrapped with bamboo leaves. Sometime lotus leaf is used too.  This restaurant is promoting its dumpling and has a display of the ingredients used for making Bak Chang at its entrance.

Other posting on Bak Chang or in Mandarin, Zongzi can be seen HERE.

Cooling the Heat

The heat of the day can be suffocating. We are experiencing very warm weather lately.  The meteorological department has announced that the high temperature will last till September.

The best way to chill down for me is a big bowl of shaved ice dessert.  This is from Tong Pak Fu dessert shop.  The shaved ice is smooth. Accompanying it were some mango cubes, jelly and red beans.  Yummy!

What do you take in order to chill down on a hot day?

Rotiboy Bakeshoppe

Rotiboy Bakeshoppe in 1 Utama Mall.

The theme for 1st May's posting was 'bakery'.  Unfortunately I didn't participate.  Although I am very, very late in posting a photo related to the theme,  I would still like to share my favourite bakery here, i.e. the Rotiboy Bakeshoppe.  It has many branches in various malls.  This bakery is most popular with its Mexican Bun. If you walk from the KLCC subway station to Suria KLCC Mall, you will be drawn into the bakery by the irresistible whiff of freshly baked Mexican Bun that carries a tinge of coffee.  Mmmm............that's an ommph moment for me.

Photos of 'Bakeries' from around the world can be viewed HERE.

Soy Sauce Factory Visit

With my fellow neighbours, we joined a one-day tour of factories in Selangor.  Ha ha....that's something that I thought I would do only during my school days. Suprisingly, this kind of tour is also very popular among senior citizens. Some fellow senior citizen neighbours were joining this tour and invited the rest of us to come along. So, we hopped onto the bandwagon and one of the visits brought us to a soy sauce factory in Sg. Buluh.

It's my first visit to a soy sauce factory. We were being briefed about the process of making soy sauce by the factory manager in the photos above.

Nasi Campur

A stall selling Nasi Campur or in English, Mixed Rice.  This is where one can choose to have a plate of rice with a selection of 1 meat or fish dish and 2 vegetable dishes to go with it.  At this stall, there was so many variety of dishes that look sumptuous. This is a typical meal that we have for lunch or dinner.

Do you like Nasi Campur? Where is your favourite stall? And what are your favourite dishes?

The Restaurant

Was made to wait outside my nieces school gate as the gate will only be opened when the school dismissal alarm bell goes off. Being bored, I walked across to the restaurant's kitchen and took this photo.

Traditional Pastries

Traditional pastries on display at a coffee shop in Bidor that we stopped for toilet visit. I like the name 'Wife Biscuit', literally translated from its Chinese name, "Lau Por Ping". If I am not mistaken, these biscuits are usually sent as part of a Chinese wedding dowry by a groom to the bride's family in the old days.

Soon Kee Beef Noodle

Delicious supper of Soon Kee Beef Noodle & Fish Porridge in the heart of KL City with the great company of 5 neighbourhood friends. This is what I call good life ~ good friends, great food!!
"Use your first smile, your first form of generosity, of love, of kindness—use it at home; start at home. And if there is something left over—if … your plate is just full of abundance of patience and goodness and smiles and joy, then by all means, you should go … and offer that to others. But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
