Rain From A Distance

This is the sea of green that would greet you when you visit the paddy fields in Sekinchan, one of the well-known bowl rice in Malaysia. The storm was brewing in the sky and at the far distance, you can see that the sky has already started flooding the earth with loads of water. It's time to pack up and rush to our car before the downpour hit us!

Five-Foot Way in Tangkak
Many pre-war buildings in Malaysia has five-foot way. In Malay, it is known as kaki lima. In Hokkien, it is called "goh kaki".
Five foot way refers to the 'pedestrian walkways indented into the ground floor of a building from the road, so that the overhanging upper floors can provide a cover to shield pedestrians from the sun and rain' [Source: Wikipedia]. As implied by the name, a five-foot way is assume to be of five feet wide.
This photo feature a five-foot way in Tangkak town. We stopped by this small town to savour a bowl of its well-known Tangkak Beef Noodle and to buy some locally-made "Tau Sar Pheah" (a pastry with green bean filling). The five-foot way is still decorated with the festive Chinese New Year red lanterns. The two rows of shops along the main street of Tangkak town is very similar to those in my hometown, Melaka. I feel very at home here.

My World Tues - Plant A Tree
Together with Rev. Mahinda and Sis. Sumangala, we plant a tree in the compound of Alokarama Retreat Centre during the recent Green Thumb Workshop. The sapling of this fragrant flowering plant was brought back by Rev. Mahinda from Sarnath, India (which was the deer park where the Buddha preached his first sermon).
I really had lotsa fun learning about herbs gardening and nutritional diet during the workshop. It was also a spiritual uplifting weekend for us as we were able to take time off our hectic lives to calm our mind with meditation and minful living.

Nyonya Dance
A Nyonya (Straits-borned Chinese) dance performed during Wesak International Cultural Night at Brickfields Maha Vihara.
The Nyonya Baju Kebaya (traditional costume) is very well-known for its beautiful embroidery. It is usually worn with a sarong. See those beautiful attires wore by the alluring dancers in the photo.

My World Tuesday - Odissi Classical Dance

For the first time, I saw the performance of the well-known Odissi Classical Indian Dance originated from the province of Orissa, India.
I love everything about the Odissi dance. From the elaborate costumes & headdress of the dancers to the eye movements, stamping of the feet to the beat of the music, sound of the bells on the anklet, elegant postures and hand gestures (known as mudras) of the dancers.
Take note of the poses of the dancers. It is said that the poses in an Odissi dance is more contorted than other classical Indian dance. The dance was so fascinating! My eyes were glued to the performance at all time!
If you have never get the chance to catch an Odissi Classical Dance, below is a video featuring Malaysia's well-known classical Indian dancer, Ramli Ibrahim (in red pants). This is a breathtaking performance!

Monochrome Monday & Theme Day - Tattoo in Monochrome
Took this photo during last Saturday's Walk for the Children 2009 organized by Sunway University College. It was a noble effort by the students to raise fund for Harvest Centre, a non-profit organization that provide educational programs for poor urban children in Sentul. The theme for the walk was "Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Through Education".
I hope through this project, the students will learn more to care about the society around us. Learn more about leadership skills in supporting charity efforts.
