Durian Durian

We enjoyed this durian after our trip to Broga Hill. We stopped by a Chinese Temple and outside the temple there were some fruit vendors. One of the ladies kept asking us to try her durian. Eventually we gave in to this tempting fruit. It's YUMMY!!!

For durian lover out there, how about doing charity and at the same time you are able to enjoy a buffet of durian? The Charity Durian Festival III event is back.

Five tonnes of durian will make their way to Subang Parade on Sunday, July 4th together with mangosteens and rambutans to delight shoppers who will get a chance to dig into the King of Fruits while chipping in for a good cause. Durian lovers can purchase RM20 coupons and enjoy durians for 1 hour. There will be 4 hourly durian-eating sessions to pick from.

Proceeds from the event will be channelled to the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia, a national charity based in Subang Jaya which fulfils the wishes of children who are stricken with terminal illnesses across the country. This innovative idea was spearheaded by Subang Parade and SJ Echo (Subang Jaya’s community paper) and it is now in its 3rd year running.

My World Tues - Durian Season

The durian season has started for awhile. In fact a friend told me that it is going to end soon. I haven't really started feasting on them. The weather has been hot lately and avoiding durian is a wise move for me. I am afraid of being heaty after eating durian and fall sick with sore throat. Many who practice Western medicine do not believe on this thing that has to do with durian being heaty for our body.

But I abide with mom's teachings that durian is heaty and NEVER ever consume it with hard liquor and Chinese medicine. It can be deadly. A schoolmate of mine lost his brother after he ate durian and take Chinese medicine. He never wake up from his sleep. That was a really sad incident.

ABC Wednesday - 'F' is for Fresh Coconut

Fresh coconut is one of my favourite drinks. It's very refreshing and the coconut flesh is a great delight too.

There are many benefits to drinking coconut, as I have said in my previouse Coconut Stall posting.

When I had dengue fever, a friend suggested that I consume coconut water from 9 coconuts on a daily basis. I thought that was an overkill!! I didn't follow her instruction but I believe the little coconut water that I had then did help to improve my immune system.

This is my posting for ABC Wednesday's meme.

Rambutans in Season!

Rambutans are in season!!! This is one of my favourite fruits. I love my rambutans crunchy, sweet, juicy and "lekang" (that means the flesh is easily removed from the seed).

In the second photo, the vendor is also selling dukong. This fruit is similar to langsat, but taste sweeter. It lacks the tangy taste that one would find in langsat. So I don't really like it that much.

The price of rambutan is still expensive. Two weeks ago I bought one kilogram for RM5 at a fruit stall near the round-about of Sri Muda, Shah Alam. The vendor wasn't honest, he picked rotten fruits for me. I realized it when he almost finished packing for me. I chided him and removed some of the rotten fruits. But when I reached home, I realized half of my bag was filled with rotten rambutans. That really upsetted me and I made a vow not to frequent that fruit stall again irregardless of how tempting its fruits are! The last time I were there, they told me the mangoes I was buying cost RM10 for 3kg. But after choosing my fruits, they said it was supposed to be RM6 per kg!! That annoyed me and I decided not to buy at all. So this time it's actually a second unhappy incident for me. I am convinced once again that this fruit stall is not really honest in doing its business.

I will wait for the price of rambutans to go down to feast on it! Usually the price will drop when the supply of rambutans increase. Most likely to happen at the peak of the fruit season. I hope that would happen real soon!!!

What are your favourite fruits?

Durian Season is Here!

Durian season has reached its peak here!! This King of Fruit is one of our favourite fruits. At the start of the season, durian is usually very expensive, about RM12 per kg. But now, one can buy 3 durians for the price of RM10!!! So for those of us who love this fruit, it's the best time to have durian feast!
In this photo, we can see the man in dark glasses smelling the durian. If the durian gives out a strong, heady smell, it means the durian is ripe. Another method is to shake the durian and if one can feel the fruits inside the shell is moving, it means the fruit is ripe. Most people prefer slightly bitter-sweet-flavoured durian. To choose this, pick durian with brownish skin instead of green ones. This is very true because I just returned from buying durian this evening. And I got a bitter-sweet-flavoured fruit that has brownish skin! Thanks to friends of our community website who gave out these tips!
Do you like eating durians?

Mangosteen Season

It is mangosteen season now!!! Yes, this dark purple fruit, with white segment flesh, is yummy!! They are extremely sweet!! The white segments of the fruit is the edible part. I recalled bringing some mangosteen to friends in northern China. A Swedish colleague started peeling and eating the fruit before I realized it. He even ate the purple internal skin of the fruit. So now I make it a point to inform first timer who try this fruit that only the white segments are edible.

How to choose mangosteen that is ripe? Usually I would press the skin. If it is a bit soft, then the fruit is considered ripe. If it is very hard when you press it, then it is not ripe yet. Avoid buying this. Another interesting tip is to check at the bottom of the fruit and you will see something that looks like the shape of a flower. In the photo above, most of this flower shape at the bottom have 6 petals. That means the fruit has 6 segments. I always prefer to choose fruit that is medium in size. Reason being the flesh would be medium or small and thus there would not be any seed in the fruit. Big segment always come with big seed that you need to discard, instead of swallowing it. From my past experience, swallowing those seeds will cause terrible constipation!

Coconut Stall

Coconut water is the best way to quench one's thirst. It's refreshing to gulp a big glass of cool coconut water on a scorching afternoon! Or we locals would say, it helps to to keep the body cool! It is just like sports drink, coconut water has electrolytes that helps replenish lost body fluids during rigorous activities. It is also very rich in potassium, a lot higher than the content of a sports drink. Another great benefits, it also promotes weight loss and detoxifies.

Based on my recent encounter with the life-threatening dengue fever, I discovered that drinking coconut water also boost body immune system and helps in fighting virus. With its many benefits, paying RM2.50 (equivalent to USD1.30) for each coconut, isn't this a very affordable way to good health?

Jambu Air

Have you tried it before? Do you like it?
"Use your first smile, your first form of generosity, of love, of kindness—use it at home; start at home. And if there is something left over—if … your plate is just full of abundance of patience and goodness and smiles and joy, then by all means, you should go … and offer that to others. But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
