Deepavali - Fruit Kolam

Continuing the joy of Deepavali celebration, I am posting a kolam that used some fruits, i.e. apples and oranges as part of it. Today's posting is not fully monochrome. I have kept the fruits in colour to highlight it. Learnt this Photoshop trick from a digital photography magazine that I read at the news vendor. Sssssshhh.....yup, I didn't buy the magazine. Just flipped it and read the tips and tested it on today's photo. Have you done the same in the past like I did?

Happy Deepavali

Happy Deepavali to all DPBs around the world. May the glow of lights illuminate our hearts and minds.

This is my neighbour's little daughter, Akhila, in her new clothes. We were invited to their house to join them in the Deepavali celebration, which is a celebration of light over darkness, or good over evil.

Deepavali Kolam

Happy Deepavali Day to all Hindus around the world! May you have a splendid celebration with family and friends.

I am glad to post the recent photos of Deepavali from One Utama Mall in Petaling Jaya. A
huge colourful peacock with a vibrant colour kolam (rice-grain drawing) greeted fellow shoppers. Many are attracted to this colourful kolam, that form part of the tails of the peacock.

Some information about kolam derived from Tamil Electronic Library © K. Kalyanasundaram :

"Kolam" refers to decorative artwork drawn on the floor in front of deities in puja rooms or in front of houses in South India. It is believed that kolam bestow prosperity to homes. Kolam-drawing is a distinctive cultural tradition of Tamils of South India. As there were many South Indians who migrated to Malaysia in the early 20th century, the tradition of drawing kolam is still widely practised here.

Most often finely grinded rice flour is used to make these drawings. Colours are created by adding coloured powders to the rice. It is a time old cultural tradition of South Indian families going back to many many generations. Young girls learn how to draw kolam patterns from their mothers or grandmothers. The patterns are often passed on from generation to generation. Kolams are also drawn on weddings.

More information of Kolam can be found from Wikipedia.

Deepavali Delights

A wide array of saris and kurtas were put on sale for Diwali! I love those colours of Indian ethnic clothes! In fact I have learnt to tie a sari from my colleague. Once we had an ethnic costume day in our office, of course, my choice of the day was a sari!

Deepavali Glow

A beautiful stage was set up at Mid-Valley Mall for the Deepavali celebration. The stage was decorated with sandstone elephants, colourful lamps & umbrellas, vibrant-coloured textiles, garlands of jasmine and surrounded with stalls selling snacks and sweet meats. The decors are so well thought off! The whole place has a very festive feel to it. I just love those colours around the whole stage. They are so attractive!!!

Check out those stalls surrounding the stage below:

A sweet meats stall ~ look at those varieties of sweet desserts attracting buyers!

Beautiful jasmine and chrysanthemum garlands for prayers and hair decorations.

M is for Muruku Sellers (ABC Wednesday)

M is for Muruku ~ one of my favourite snacks!

Muruku is a popular South Indian snacks known by most Malaysians. In preparation for Diwali celebration, one can see many muruku stalls selling this delicious snacks. This is the one I saw at Lebuh Ampang, KL. The owner has decorated her stall with Happy Deepavali mobile greetings. They made the stall more festive-like. She is actually frying the muruku in a wok beside her stall.

Hope there would be some muruku for me to munch on when I visit my neighbour's house on Deepavali Day!

"Use your first smile, your first form of generosity, of love, of kindness—use it at home; start at home. And if there is something left over—if … your plate is just full of abundance of patience and goodness and smiles and joy, then by all means, you should go … and offer that to others. But we must begin at home." by Dr Robin Smith
